Viral baking craze combines two sweet treats and it's truly 'sensational' - Opinion

Croissants and cookies are two of the world’s most scrumptious baked treats. You can’t beat the flaky, buttery pastry of a classic French croissant, and a chewy chocolate chip cookie never fails to hit the spot – but what if you combined them?

It’s random mash-up that never really crossed anyone’s mind… until now. The ‘Crookie’ has gone viral on social media this month as a revolutionary new sweet treat. I decided to make it at home, and my boyfriend’s reaction says it all.

‘Crookie’ takes over social media

The ‘crookie’ is a croissant that’s filled and topped with chocolate chip cookie dough, creating a rich, gooey, chocolatey hybrid that anyone with a sweet tooth will love. It’s baked in the oven, but not for too long so the cookie dough is melty, rather than crispy.

The idea was created by French chef Stéphane Louvard, who owns a bakery on Paris’ Rue de Châteaudun called Boulangerie Louvard. He told the BBC that the idea randomly came to him one Saturday in 2022 after baking a batch of croissants.

“I thought to myself… you know what? Let’s have some fun,” he said – so he split the croissants, stuffed them with cookie dough and baked them again. Then, the ‘Crookie’ was born, but it didn’t take off until February 2024.

The baking craze suddenly blew up on TikTok and Louvard struggled to keep up with the demand, often selling 1,500 to 2,000 crookies a day. Now, everywhere is selling the dessert mash-up, and people are making their own at home too.

How to make one at home

To make one, all you need to do is buy a packet of croissants and make a batch of cookie dough. You could bake your own croissants too if you want to really challenge yourself, but I opted for the easy option.

Any cookie recipe will do – just find one online and make it as per the instructions. Here’s one from Betty Crocker that will work perfectly. Add any chocolate chips you like, I used a combination of white, milk and dark.

Once you’ve made the cookie dough, set it aside and slice the croissants in half. Pop them on an oven-proof tray and spoon some of the cookie dough inside each one. Then, squeeze the croissant back together and place some cookie dough on the top.

Bake them in the oven for around 15 minutes at 325°F (170°C fan/ 190°C). The cookie should still be really soft and melty when you take them out. If the cookie dough has spread in the oven, you can mould it back into shape while it’s still soft.

My boyfriend had one word

In total, the crookies took me about an hour to make and were worth every second. They’re really rich, and you definitely wouldn’t want to eat more than one – but the combination of croissant, cookie and melted chocolate is to die for.

I’m always sceptical of these TikTok-viral recipes, because a lot of the time they’re overhyped and overrated, but this one is far from that. I made one for my boyfriend and he took a bite, looked at me and described it in just one word: “Sensational.”

Viral food trends usually come and go really quickly, but it looks like this one is here to stay. It has a permanent spot on bakery shelves, with stores across the world now selling the innovative Parisian invention.

Everyone is still flocking to Boulangerie Louvard to taste one of the original ones too, which cost €5.90 ($6.39) each. “Every week, we say, ‘It’s going to calm down… right?'” Louvard laughed – but he’s not complaining!
