Ronna McDaniel cut by NBC News amid uproar from staff and viewers

It's official: Ronna McDaniel will not be hired as a contributor for NBC News after all.

The widely-reported hire of the outgoing Republican National Committee chair triggered outrage from much of the network's audience and from its reporters and staff, owing to McDaniel's propagation of 2020 election conspiracy theories and her attacks on the network's own reporters.

Multiple on-air personalities at NBC and MSNBC, including Chuck Todd and Rachel Maddow, went on air to criticize the decision.

By this week, reports circulated that NBC was backtracking on the hire, which some speculated was only offered in the first place in return for McDaniel helping the network secure a presidential debate.

In an open letter to NBC staff, NBCUniversal chairman Cesar Conde made it official Tuesday evening — and took responsibility for the hiring decision.

"There is no doubt that the last several days have been difficult for the News Group," Conde wrote. "After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor."

"No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned. Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal," Conde continued.

"I want to personally apologize to our team members who felt we let them down. While this was a collective recommendation by some members of our leadership team, I approved it and take full responsibility for it."
