Sheffield Wednesday gem handed captain's armband during international match, he shone during win

A Sheffield Wednesday gem was handed the captain’s armband whilst on international duty on Tuesday night.

Sheffield Wednesday have a few players who’ve featured on international duty in the past week or so.

It’s a sign of changing times and changing fortunes at Hillsborough with Danny Rohl at the helm, who’s seen the likes of Bailey Cadamarteri, Ike Ugbo, and Di’Shon Bernard head overseas for international fixtures recently.

Cadamarteri has turned out for England U19s and managed to grab his first international goal, Ugbo returned to the Canadian international side and made an assist, whilst Bernard earned a 3rd place finish in the CONCACAF Nations League with Jamaica.

Another current Wednesday player on international duty is James Beadle.

James Beadle at Sheffield Wednesday

The 19-year-old has steadily become a fan favourite at Sheffield Wednesday.

Joining on loan from Brighton in January, the ball-playing goalkeeper has shown his qualities, not only as a passer but as a shot-stopper too.

He’s so far managed to keep five clean sheets in 11 Championship outings for the Owls, conceding 17; six of which in the 6-0 defeat vs Ipswich Town last time out.

And the former England U19 man has also earned himself a spot in the England U20 set up for this month’s international break.

Brighton talent James Beadle captains England U20s vs Czech Republic

Beadle started for England U20s against Poland last week, playing his role in a 5-1 win in the Elite League.

And in another Elite League clash against Czech Republic, Beadle shone once more, this time taking the captain’s armband from Peterborough United centre-back Ronnie Edwards and overseeing a 3-1 win.

Beadle made a number of saves throughout the game as England U20s arguably made harder work of the match than they should’ve done.

But Beadle may have been disappointed with the goal he conceded, which caught him flat-footed as the ball rolled into the far corner.

Still, it was an overall strong performance from the Englishman.

Back to business for James Beadle and Sheffield Wednesday

International fixtures are done and dusted and for Sheffield Wednesday’s international contingency, it’s a hard return to Championship reality.

The Owls have just eight games of their season left and a visit from Swansea City in the Championship this weekend.

The Swans have lost just one of their last five, finding some consistency in the Championship as they look to secure their second tier status for another year.

Beadle and co will need to be on top form after that demolition at Portman Road earlier in the month, and Rohl will be hoping that Beadle, Ugbo, Cadamarteri, and Bernard are all fit and fresh after long journeys during this break.

Kick off vs Swansea City is at 3pm on Saturday.
