'Wouldn't surprise me': EFL pundit tips 'fantastic' coach to leave his club amid Sunderland interest

Carlton Palmer has shared his prediction on the future of Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

Danny Rohl joined Sheffield Wednesday in October with absolutely zero experience in management, though he had spent years on the coaching staff of RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national team.

Having worked with the likes of Ralph Hassenhuttl and Hansi Flick, the 34-year-old took his experiences to Hillsborough and it has so far worked a treat.

Sheffield Wednesday already looked resigned to relegation after only three months of the campaign, but Rohl has completely transformed them, while they sit 13th in the table since he took over.

Unfortunately for them though, the season started in August and they instead sit a point from safety.

While Rohl’s main focus is keeping the Owls up, he certainly will have noticed the growing talk around his future.

It is expected that a number of English and German clubs will want to snatch Rohl from Wednesday’s grasp, and Sunderland are one of the latest to be linked with him.

The Black Cats are enduring a dismal end to the campaign and are desperately waiting to appoint their new permanent manager, with the arrival of Michael Beale in December proving to be a disaster.

The Wearside outfit have already been heavily linked with Will Still, but it now looks like they could be considering a move for Rohl too.

It is so far unclear where his future lies and could still depend on whether they are relegated, but pundit Carlton Palmer has tipped him to leave Yorkshire even if he keeps them up.

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said: Palmer said to FLW: “I’ve said this several times, Danny Röhl has done a fantastic job after coming into Wednesday. I think he will keep them up. He has galvanised the club, he’s got the players playing for him, and I really do feel that he will keep them up. I thought that they were dead and buried, and the job that he has done has been brilliant.

“Röhl has already spoken about the things that need to be put in place to move the club forward, whether it be the training ground, the dressing room, Hillsborough. If these things are put in place, and then he’s not given the tools to strengthen the side in the way that he would like, then I think he and his backroom staff will be well coveted and well sought after.

“He will need to be backed by the owner if they want to keep him, and I’ve already heard one or two rumblings about that. So it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Röhl were to keep Wednesday up, and then move on to pastures new.”

Are we currently attractive enough for Danny Rohl?

If Danny Rohl keeps Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship then there will surely just be even more competition for Sunderland.

The coach sees a lot of potential in the Owls squad and already has a great relationship with the supporters, so may prefer to stay there rather than joining us, who just seem to have been on a rapid decline for months now.

Rohl definitely looks to be an attractive proposition though and his relationship with the players is also definitely something we lacked with Beale, while he certainly fits the model too.

I would be happy with either Still or Rohl come the summer, but what I really hope is that we have already made strides to appointing our number one target shortly after the season ends, so we don’t spend ages trying to bring someone in and then they miss half of pre-season.
