‘He really has’: Conor Coady left blown away by 18-year-old’s performances for Leeds this season

Conor Coady and Leicester City are currently in a battle with Leeds United for a place in the Championship’s top two.

The two sides are both currently sat on 82 points heading into the resumption of the season, with Leeds currently ahead on goal difference, all be it having played a game more.

Coady spoke about the automatic promotion race right at the beginning of the international break and admitted that Leeds’ form since the turn of the New Year has been incredible.

The former England defender also shared how many points he thinks will be required to secure a top two finish this season, with the battle for automatic promotion at a standard which has never been seen before.

And Coady has now been speaking about another aspect of Leeds he has been impressed with while on co-commentary duty for England U21s in their 7-0 demolition of Luxembourg last night.

Conor Coady says he has been so impressed with Leeds starlet this season

In action for the Young Lions last night was Leeds midfielder Archie Gray, who was making his first ever start for Lee Carsley.

Gray actually made his debut for England U21s from the bench last week in Azerbaijan, a game in which it took him just five minutes to get on the scoresheet and continue his remarkable rise.

Speaking on what he has seen from Gray so far this season, Coady says he has been so impressed with his performance levels at Leeds and believes he is capable of playing in a variety of positions.

He said: “I think it goes to show how important the Football League is. These players are having brilliant seasons at the top of the Championship where it’s ever so close.

“He’s done brilliant for Leeds. He really has. He’s disciplined, I think he understands the game a lot, that’s why he can play different positions. Just to understand that role at right-back, we see a lot of team play with right-backs going inside, I think is something he can do as well.”

Leeds star Gray was compared to John Stones last week

Gray has clearly made a big first impression in his first ever England U21s camp, both scoring and assisting in his two appearances across the week.

Coady spoke last night about Gray’s ability to not only play in two positions, but also the fact he can play as a right-back that can either invert centrally, or play out wide.

His versatility is clearly something which stands him above a lot of players already and speaking on commentary the other day, David James actually likened him to Manchester City’s. John Stones.

He said: “Yeah, I mentioned Rico Lewis a few minutes earlier, so many players nowadays are multiple position. There was a time where if you could play in more than one position, you were considered a utility player and not specific for anything, and arguably lower down the pecking order.

“Whereas, as we’ve seen in the Premier League and in international football, if you’ve got that versatility, John Stones is probably the best example at the moment of a senior player.

“And Archie Gray is following that mould, as you said he’s been fantastic for Leeds this season, and hopefully for him, his future is in the senior England side playing in one of many different positions.”
