Expert reveals step-by-step guide to shampooing your hair the 'right way'

How you use shampoo has a huge impact on your hair and it seems most of us might be doing it wrong.

Licensed cosmetologist and hair expert Casey Nicole has revealed on TikTok the correct way to shampoo your hair with a step-by-step guide to ensure minimal damage and better growth.

How to shampoo your hair correctly

In addition to Casey’s tips, we have explained the importance of each step.

Soak your hair thoroughly

Casey says patience is important when washing your hair as you need to ensure it’s pre-soaked well enough.

This is recommended for two reasons – it helps the product spread evenly when all of the hair strands are wet and you use less shampoo if your hair is wet as the water would have already loosened the excess oil.

Shake the shampoo bottle before use

Yes, you must shake the shampoo bottle before use as it mixes its components, which would have settled at the bottom otherwise.

If the shampoo isn’t mixed thoroughly, you could end up only using the concentrated part of it, thus irritating the scalp.

Bubble it up before applying

How often do you spread the shampoo between your palms and wait until it forms bubbles to use?

Casey highly recommends emulsifying the shampoo before applying it on your scalp. Take the required amount of any product and rub your palms together until the shampoo has spread evenly.

The expert says your fingers can act as a hairbrush to rub the shampoo along the nape and hairline for a deeper cleanse.

Never shampoo your hair just once

The hair expert couldn’t emphasize more on the importance of shampooing your hair at least twice.

The first round helps rid of the accumulated dirt, so it might not be super “bubbly or sudsy”.

However, you must repeat the process more than twice if you use multiple hair products or if there is a build-up due to long gaps between each hair wash.

Casey concludes her video by telling her viewers that they should never shampoo the tip of their hair and only the scalp.
