Liverpool have seen plenty of familiar faces pass through the club over the last week.

Saturday brought the annual LFC Legends charity game at Anfield, with Fernando Torres the star name to return to his former club.

Of course, there was still business to attend to for the current Liverpool side, too. There weren’t many not involved with their national teams, with a huge amount of Jurgen Klopp’s squad away on duty this week.

Darwin Nunez was one of those to stay back on Merseyside though, having picked up a knock against Manchester United. And with the legends in town, Nunez was treated to a visit from a very familiar face.

Darwin Nunez gets special visit

There can’t have been many involved at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre this week. Those who weren’t away with their national teams were generally injured.

So, when former Reds winger Maxi Rodriguez headed to Kirkby, he was lucky to find his old teammate Nunez waiting.

Maxi played well for the LFC Legends on Saturday. He might not have scored, but the Argentinian gave a reminder as to why he was so well-liked on Merseyside.

And taking to X to post a photo of him and Nunez yesterday afternoon, Maxi also reminded those who needed it that he was actually once a teammate of Liverpool’s current No.9

“I met and [sic] old friend at Liverpool’s training session,” wrote the 43-year-old. Back to the future!

When did Maxi Rodriguez and Darwin Nunez play together

Although they are almost 20 years(!) apart in age, Maxi and Darwin are indeed former teammates. The pair teamed up for Uruguayan giants Penarol back in 2017 and 2018.

Back then, Nunez was obviously just a young kid coming through the academy. Maxi meanwhile was a seasoned pro taking a two year hiatus between a 10-year spell at Newell’s Old Boys.

The former Argentina international had a decent record for Penarol, too. Despite nearing 40, Maxi managed 49 appearances across two years, scoring 15 times.

Nunez meanwhile was struggling with knee issues. The then teenager played just 14 times during the former Liverpool man’s stint, scoring once. Nice to see them back together!
