‘You first heard it’: Eddie Jordan wouldn’t be ‘surprised’ if £180k-a-week driver replaces Lance Stroll

Aston Martin could replace Lance Stroll with a race-winning driver for the 2025 F1 season, Eddie Jordan says.

Just like teammate Fernando Alonso, Stroll is in the final year of his contract with the team.

And speaking on the Formula For Success podcast, former F1 team boss Jordan suggested that his time may up.

Stroll’s father, Lawrence, owns the team, but he’s struggled to match two-time world champion Alonso.

Alonso scored 206 of the team’s 280 points in last year’s championship, finishing six spots above the Canadian.

Only Alex Albon at Williams (96.4%) and Nico Hulkenberg at Haas (75%) scored a higher share of their team’s points than Alonso (73.6%).

One journalist claimed that Stroll was under ‘pressure’ after crashing of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix earlier this month.

The 25-year-old did at least respond well in Australia, out-qualifying Alonso and bagging eight points for the team in sixth.

The Spaniard finished ahead on the road but received a 20-second penalty after George Russell’s crash at the end of the race.

Eddie Jordan says Carlos Sainz could replace Lance Stroll

Jordan reckons that Stroll senior may be willing to move his son aside to sign Carlos Sainz.

Sainz, who won in Melbourne ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, is without a drive for next year after Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton.

And Jordan reckons that the Silverstone outfit may pair the £180k-a-week driver with compatriot Alonso for 2025.

He said: “Do not be surprised if you see an all-Spanish Aston Martin team next year.

“Bear that in mind where you first heard it. Log that down and move on.”

Will Alonso race for Aston Martin in 2025?

Jordan is clearly assuming that Alonso will sign an extension with Aston, but that isn’t guaranteed.

Team principal Mike Krack has already confirmed that he’ll offer the 42-year-old a new contract in the early part of the season.

But Alonso, the oldest driver on the grid, must first decide if he wants to continue racing next year.

If he does, then one journalist thinks he may instead hold out for a seat at Mercedes or Red Bull.

He already knows there will be a vacancy at the Silver Arrows thanks to Hamilton’s departure.

Sergio Perez is in a contract year at Red Bull, while the future of Max Verstappen is uncertain too.

One former F1 driver insists the Bulls ‘cannot’ partner Alonso with the Dutchman.

Incidentally, Aston Martin are one of the teams interested in signing the reigning world champion if he becomes available.

As for Mercedes, Martin Brundle fears that his incident with Russell at Albert Park could hurt his chances.

It may be the case, then, that Aston Martin is the most realistic option for the 32-time Grand Prix winner.
