Former German international Lars Stindl will end his career after the season which he played in a return to boyhood club Karlsruhe.

"It was an incredibly beautiful and intense time, with many highs but also some difficult moments," Stindl said in a statement issued by second division Karlsruhe on Thursday.

"It was a dream come true for me last summer to have returned to my home club. This last year was incredibly special for me!"

Stindl, 35, came through the Karlsruhe academy and made his first team debut in 2007.

The attacking midfielder left for Hanover in 2010 before in 2015 joining Borussia Mönchengladbach where he played until his return to Karlsruhe last summer. He has 376 Bundesliga matches and won 11 Germany caps.

"For us as a coaching team it was a great gift to be able to work with a player like Lars with this outstanding quality," coach Christian Eichner said.

"It will be a very special and emotional moment for all of us in the summer when he really retires and ends his great career in Karlsruhe."
