Three Liverpool players help overcome Brighton scare to send timely reminder to Man City and Arsenal

Liverpool will sit back and relax while title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal slog it out at the Etihad this afternoon.

The Reds came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield and move back to the top of the Premier League table for the time being at least.

Liverpool got off to the worst possible start when former Gunners striker Danny Welbeck fired in after just 90 seconds.

Roberto De Zerbi's side have a good record at the home of their Merseyside opponents and were aiming to collect another impressive result.

Mohamed Salah

It was the fourth time Liverpool had conceded the first goal in their last seven home league matches.

They hadn't lost any of the previous three and Luis Diaz drew them level in the 27th minute, volleying in from close range after Brighton failed to clear.

Liverpool were dominant early in the second half and that pressure eventually counted when Mohamed Salah put his team ahead after a fine pass from Alexis Mac Allister.

That was how the result stayed and Jurgen Klopp's team now sit three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table.

Three players key

Liverpool had three players in particular who played crucial roles in their victory.

Diaz troubled Brighton throughout the match and easily could have netted more than the one he managed in the first half.

The Colombian should score more than he does, with today's strike just his seventh in the league this term.

There is a sense that he has an extra level to his game that Liverpool will hope he can reach in the coming weeks.

Salah was under par for much of the match, with Jamie Carragher claiming he looked 'clumsy' in possession.

However, as he so often does, the Egyptian came up with the vital moment midway through the second half.

His chance was laid on a plate by Mac Allister, who shone against his former club.

The Argentine picked up an early yellow card but had the composure to see out the remainder of the match and play a vital part in seeing his team home.

De Zerbi passes audition

Roberto De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi is now one of the favourites to replace Klopp following the news that Xabi Alonso won't leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

The Italian was uncertain about his future when asked earlier this week and there is reported interest from Anfield.

He has seemingly already caught the eye of Liverpool chiefs but seeing it first hand won't hurt his cause.

Brighton play an attractive style of football that would certainly excite Reds fans.

Liverpool duo targeted

Conor Bradley

Brighton made a clear attempt to target the right side of Liverpool's defence, especially in the first half.

Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah have excelled so far this season but were troubled by the visitors.

The absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate hasn't cost Liverpool just yet.

But Klopp will be hoping he can get both back fit to give him more options for the final stages of the season.
