TV singer halts performance and calls out judge for harsh critique

Hailing from Springfield, Massachusets, Madai Chakell stepped out on the American Idol stage ready to impress. During her first audition, Madai pulled out all the stops with her rendition of I Kissed A Girl by judge Katy Perry. She moved through to Hollywood Week thanks to Lionel Richie and Katy – but Luke Bryan was yet to be impressed by the singer.

After making a big impression after her I Kissed A Girl performance, Madai took to the stage again during American Idol‘s March 31 episode. She already showed off her vocal range during her audition, singing Happy Birthday and dropping some of her accents. But, things took a different turn when she halted her second audition altogether.

Luke was keen to let Madai know after her first audition about how he thought she was a year or two off where she should be to proceed in the competition.

Madai wanted to show off her versatility, telling the judges she is an “R’n’B girl” and could perform some “Little Mermaid” or “whatever” if she “switches it up.”

Lionel was impressed by Madai’s “characters” and her “showbiz” ability, but many FOX viewers took to X (Twitter) to share their opposing thoughts on the singer.

She has a Broadway background

When Madai explains she has a background performing on Broadway in New York, her first audition makes a lot more sense.

The American Idol star is a performer who moved to New York in her younger years for her career.

Speaking during Hollywood Week, Madai says she’s “made to do this,” the American Idol star “loves the camera” and says she’s been “training for this lifestyle” since childhood.

Singer stops performance

Hollywood Week comes around and Madai is ready to break out in song, performing Ariana Grande’s Tattooed Heart.

But, the singer stops the song twice before deciding to perform it acapella as she said the pianist wasn’t playing how they had practiced.

She wanted to prove to Luke she was a “true performer and artist” but it seemed the plan backfired as the judge asked her after her performance if her voice was “OK.”

Luke said her singing was “shaky” in parts, but added: “Thanks for performing for us.”

In a confessional, Madai blasts Luke for his comments: “Is your voice OK? What do you think? Is your voice OK, Luke? I haven’t heard you sing. Obviously, I can sing.”
