'Incredible': Roberto De Zerbi says Liverpool have a 'great' player that 'deserves' Anfield role

Roberto De Zerbi is a leading contender for the Liverpool job and on Sunday, his Brighton side gave a good account of themselves at Anfield – but Jurgen Klopp’s Reds eventually emerged victorious.

Xabi Alonso ruled himself out of the running for the Liverpool job on Friday evening, ending any chance of him leaving Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool – along with Bayern and Madrid – have missed out on him.

It has seen De Zerbi, among others, become one of the names most-strongly linked with a move to Anfield. De Zerbi is said to be on top of Michael Edwards’ shortlist. Gary Neville loves his style of play.

On Sunday, Brighton took the lead as De Zerbi’s men looked to cause an upset at Anfield – and throw a spanner in the works in Liverpool’s push for the title. But, The Reds came from behind to secure victory.

Roberto De Zerbi could replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Danny Welbeck slammed home an opener for Brighton inside the first few minutes. But, goals from Luis Diaz and Mo Salah saw the Reds secure all three points – and climb to the top of the Premier League.

It might have been an up-close audition for De Zerbi ahead of the summer, if The Reds do make a move for the Italian. Certainly, his Brighton side put up an excellent show, maybe proving himself to Liverpool.

One player he could reunite with is Alexis Mac Allister should Liverpool get him – with Liverpool buying the Argentina World Cup winner from Brighton last summer. He laid on the assist for Liverpool’s second.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, De Zerbi raved about Mac Allister – as per TalkSPORT‘s YouTube channel. He said that he is delighted to see Mac Allister playing well at a big club like Liverpool.

“He’s become a great, great player. The assist for the second goal is incredible. Proud for him. Working with him, he deserved to be an important player in a big team,” De Zerbi said, about player Mac Allister.

Mac Allister’s stats under Liverpool target De Zerbi are incredible

For a midfielder, Mac Allister’s stars are certainly eye-catching under De Zerbi in the 34 games he played under the Italian boss. He scored eight goals and laid on theee assists. Similar to his Liverpool form.

But he did it in a Brighton side that finished five points behind the Reds last season – whereas he has produced his five goals and seven assists in his 35 Reds games, for a side pushing for the League title.

So, it is clear that De Zerbi can get the best out of Mac Allister – even if the Argentine is shining already for Liverpool. Liverpool need to know that hiring him will only improve their South American playmaker.
