'Bit of a punt': Chris Sutton has made a surprise prediction for Newcastle vs Everton tonight

After Newcastle United’s dramatic win on Saturday, Chris Sutton has made a surprising prediction for the Magpies’ game against Everton.

It is a very quick turnaround, with Newcastle United once again in action at home just days after their incredible victory over West Ham United.

St James’ Park was rocking after Harvey Barnes completed a remarkable comeback, and it should lead to a raucous atmosphere against Everton tonight.

The Magpies will be out for revenge too, having lost the reverse fixture 3-0 back in December. On that night, Kieran Trippier made a couple of massive errors while Anthony Gordon was mocked on his return to Merseyside.

The 23-year-old will not be involved tonight due to suspension, while Eddie Howe also has fresh injury problems to deal with. Jamaal Lascelles, Tino Livramento and Miguel Almiron are set to miss out, with Nick Pope, Joelinton, Callum Wilson and Sven Botman also absent.

Newcastle’s squad is stretched beyond belief, and that is why BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has made a surprise prediction for this evening’s clash with Everton.

Chris Sutton predicts the score of Newcastle vs Everton

Sutton has predicted the scores for every midweek Premier League game for BBC Sport.

He does not expect Newcastle to secure back-to-back wins, and has actually gone for a 2-1 win for Everton.

“I was at St James’ Park to see Newcastle’s late comeback to beat West Ham 4-3 and there is a lot to admire about Eddie Howe’s side,” he wrote.

“They found a way of winning the game, and it was great for Harvey Barnes to come on and change the game the way he did after missing so much of the campaign.

“My concern for them here is how much that will have taken out of them. Their squad was already injury ravaged and now their captain Jamaal Lascelles is out for several months too.

“I am taking a bit of a punt here, especially given that Everton have gone 12 league games without a win, but I think Newcastle are so stretched and put so much into it on Saturday, that it will catch up with them here.

“Everton’s big problem is still in attack because they really struggle to find the back of the net but they do create chances and I have a sneaking feeling they will get a result, just like they did when they beat the Magpies 3-0 at Goodison Park in December.”

Paul Merson does not agree with Sutton’s Newcastle prediction

Paul Merson has also predicted the midweek Premier League fixtures, and he disagrees with what Sutton has gone with.

The former Arsenal forward has told Sportskeeda that he thinks Newcastle will beat Everton on Tuesday night, going for a 3-1 win for Eddie Howe’s side.

He wrote: “I’m backing Newcastle to secure a comfortable victory this week.”

Newcastle would love a more straightforward win

In a perfect world, we beat Everton with ease tonight. But nothing is ever straightforward when it comes to Newcastle United.

The win over West Ham was a real whirlwind, and there were casualties along the way. In turn, that has made the Everton game even tougher.

But Howe will have confidence in the players that he has available, while confidence is not something you would associate with Everton right now. They are 12 games without a win, and that will hopefully extend to 13 tonight.
