Report: Why Dan Burn was angry with Lucas Paqueta at SJP yesterday

It’s going to take some getting over Newcastle United’s win over West Ham on Saturday.

Harvey Barnes was of course the hero after his two late goals claimed a thrilling Premier League win for Newcastle, as well as a vital three points in the battle for European qualification.

Still, the winger was far from the only standout on an eventful afternoon at St James’ Park.

As ever, there were more injury concerns for Eddie Howe to deal with after Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, Miguel Almiron and Tino Livramento all came off.

Alexander Isak’s two penalties may also be somewhat lost amid all the drama, while Anthony Gordon was even sent off for two bookable offences.

Indeed, it wasn’t only the Newcastle players who played their part in such drama.

Lucas Paqueta, strongly linked with a move to St James’ even after joining West Ham, played two stunning passes for the away side to get them back onto level terms before then taking a 2-1 lead.

The Brazilian sent a very respectful message to good friend Bruno Guimaraes after the game but it seems he was not particularly popular while on the pitch.

What Lucas Paqueta did to irritate some Newcastle players at St James’ Park

According to The Chronicle, some of Howe’s squad were irritated by Paqueta often going to ground throughout the contest.

In fact, defender Dan Burn was even said to have lost his cool after winning a header against the Hammers star, after which Paqueta went down clutching his face.

Burn reportedly then stood over the midfielder, urged him to get back up to his feet before complaining about the incident to referee Rob Jones.

Newcastle were at their fighting best against West Ham

This Newcastle team may not always convince but very rarely do they not compete.

While Saturday lunchtime kick-off times do not always lend themselves to great atmospheres, the Newcastle players harnessed the energy from the crowd to turn the game around.

Incidents like the one involving Paqueta surely help. They provide energy, even if it centres around anger.

As an aside, it’s interesting to note that Paqueta only actually won two fouls (via WhoScored), despite how often he was on the ground…
