'My understanding': Chelsea not actually leading the race to sign £20m player - journalist

An update has emerged involving Chelsea and one of their reported targets for the summer transfer window.

Despite profit and sustainability rules starting to become a problem for heavy spenders in the Premier League, Chelsea look like they could still be busy in the next transfer window.

Striker, central defence and goalkeeper are positions that could all be strengthened.

Sporting Lisbon duo Viktor Gyokeres and Ousmane Diomande and Athletico Paranaense shot-stopper Bento are just three names to be linked with moves to Stamford Bridge, for example.

It has been claimed that Chelsea are one of three Premier League clubs looking at Bento.

Chelsea not leading race for target

Chelsea are obviously not doing well in the Premier League right now.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s men are so far off the Champions League spots. A finish in the Europa League is the best they can now hope for.

Still, their name and the fact that they play in the Premier League may make Stamford Bridge an appealing destination for a Brazilian like Bento.

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are not leading the race for the 24-year-old, who is expected to cost £20m.

Jacobs posted on X: “Although Athletico Paranaense keeper Bento has plenty of interest, my understanding is CFC are not leading the race or advancing anything. No concrete move to date. Understand Athletico hoping for around £20m. Inter keen but price an issue. Multiple EPL clubs tracking Bento.”

Are Chelsea leading the race for any of their targets right now?

Last month, it was reported that Chelsea were in pole position to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli.

The Nigerian is the kind of player the club should probably be going all out for. He has scored 11 goals in 18 Serie A appearances this season and netted 26 times in 32 outings last term.

If Chelsea can wrap up a deal for Osimhen or another elite forward like the 25-year-old, fans are unlikely to care too much about what happens with Bento.

Pochettino already has Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez for the goalkeeper position as well.
