'Not for me': Pundit says he's now changed his mind about wanting 'unbelievable' manager at Liverpool

Liverpool fan Darragh MacAnthony has suggested that he has changed his mind about wanting one manager at Anfield, insisting that his current chairman will not lose any sleep over the prospect of him leaving.

Of course, there remains a huge question mark over the next Liverpool manager. Jurgen Klopp is approaching his final handful of games on Merseyside after announcing his departure at the end of the campaign.

It appeared that Xabi Alonso would be the man to fill the void at Liverpool. However, the Spaniard has since confirmed that he intends to remain with Bayer Leverkusen next year.

With that, the other names in contention are now being scrutinised.

Liverpool have their eye on Ruben Amorim at Sporting. He has worked wonders during his time in Portugal. And it would be little surprise to see him move on at some stage in the coming years.

But there is also interest from Liverpool in Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. De Zerbi has been extremely impressive since succeeding Graham Potter on the south coast.

De Zerbi came in for some criticism for recently suggesting that he wants assurances before committing to staying with Brighton next year.

And someone who has not been impressed by some of his conduct is Peterborough United chairman and Liverpool fan Darragh MacAnthony.

Liverpool fan doesn’t now want 44-year-old manager to succeed Jurgen Klopp

Speaking on talkSPORT, MacAnthony claimed that Brighton would not be worried about the prospect of losing De Zerbi. And he went on to suggest that he would not now want him at Anfield.

“He’s had more clubs than Tiger Woods. I think he needs to calm down. He’s played some lovely football, they’ve done okay. Tony Bloom won’t lose a moment’s sleep about that.

“He loses top players and replaces them and he makes millions. And he plays poker for a living. So I’d imagine him sitting with this guy and saying get back in your box. You’ve got a long-term contract. What do we need to speak about? Calm down and stop drinking your own Kool-Aid until you’ve actually done something,” he said.

“I got excited about this guy six, seven months ago and thought the football’s unbelievable. Maybe he’s good for Liverpool. Now I’m watching him and I’m looking at how he is in those press conferences and whatever else. Not for me,” he went on to add when discussing the links with Liverpool.

Too many warnings signs

It is an interesting point. De Zerbi started his managerial career little more than a decade ago. And yet, Brighton is the seventh club of his career to date. He has only taken charge more than 100 times with one of those sides.

He has a win record of over 41 percent during his career, and has won 37 of his 80 games with the Seagulls. So you do get the feeling that he is going to get the chance to manage a heavyweight at some stage in the future.

But replacing Klopp is going to be a monumental task for someone. So it perhaps does not bode well that some who had real excitement about De Zerbi are now seeing a different side to him.
