Glenn Hoddle impressed by £70k-a-week Tottenham player who did something ‘brilliant’ vs West Ham

Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle was left impressed by what he saw one Spurs player do on Tuesday night.

The Lilywhites came into the game against West Ham having picked up three points on the weekend against Luton Town.

And Ange Postecoglou’s side knew that another three points would see them climb above Aston Villa and into the top four.

So getting off the mark after just four minutes will have provided the visitors a lot of optimism for the game in east London.

What Glenn Hoddle said about Brennan Johnson

The game on the weekend against the Hatters was flipped on its head at half time when Brennan Johnson was introduced.

Postecoglou brought on the Welshman in the place of Dejan Kulusevski with the Swede struggling to nail down any kind of form.

Providing the cross for the equalising own goal and then the assist for Heung-min Son’s winner saw Johnson in from the start on Tuesday night.

And he didn’t take much time at all to get his name on the scoresheet after latching on the end of Timo Werner’s cross.

The goal was the £70k-per-week winger’s fifth goal of the season in the Premier League having also provided seven assists.

It was clear his movement for the goal seriously impressed Hoddle who was speaking on TNT Sports coverage of the game.

He said: “Werner does really well, goes down the outside and gets the cross in. Six players in the box and, we said before the game, Johnson is movement off the ball. We can see him out wide looking for it.

“And as soon as Werner goes on the outside, look at the movement from Johnson from the far post – brilliant – tucks it away beautifully.”

Brennan Johnson’s stats vs West Ham

The weekend really saw Johnson come into his own and show the Spurs fans just what he is capable of.

He has enjoyed some encouraging games since the turn of the year and has now provided Tottenham with eight goal contributions in his last 13 league appearances.

And it is apparent he is also impressing his teammates with both Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario singing his praises after the Luton game.

As long as the Welshman is providing goal contributions, it is going to be difficult for Postecoglou to ignore him.

Here is a summary of how the Welshman performed against the Irons.

  • 89 minutes played
  • 1 goal
  • 49 touches
  • 1 key pass
  • 17X possession lost
  • 74% pass accuracy
  • 2/3 successful dribbles
  • 2/6 ground duels won

Having started on the bench, Kulusevski was brought on in the second half, but for James Maddison with Johnson keeping his spot out on the right.

Speaking prior to the game against the Hammers, Postecoglou spoke about how Johnson was improving his game as he adjusted to life at a big club.

He said: “Like I said, for the most part he’s handled himself really well this year. It was always going to be a tough introduction for a young player, moving to a big club for a transfer fee.

“And it’s always harder for attacking players because they are usually measured on one thing, goals and assists. But I think he’s contributing in more than just that.”

Spurs welcome Johnson’s old club, Nottingham Forest, to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday which will surely have been marked on the Welshman’s calendar.

And having scored on Tuesday night, it is hard to see how Postecoglou could leave him out of the starting XI.
