'Close to being confirmed': David Ornstein claims Liverpool owners now on the verge of 'big coup'

Liverpool and Fenway Sports Group have been busy revamping behind the scenes to ensure the Reds can hit the ground running after Jurgen Klopp leaves.

The Liverpool boss stunned the fanbase when he announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down from the Anfield hotseat in the summer.

“I will leave the club at the end of the season,” Klopp said in a video shared by the Liverpool media team. “I understand that it’s a shock.”

The 56-year-old, whose Reds contract was set to run until the summer of 2026, attributed his decision to “running out of energy”.

Liverpool and FSG haven’t wasted any time in doing their best to ensure they’re as prepared as can be when they head into this transitional period.

FSG have appointed Michael Edwards as their new CEO of Football, who in turn has secured the signature of Richard Hughes as Liverpool’s new sporting director as of this summer.

What new appointment are Liverpool owners FSG now set to make?

Now, according to David Ornstein, FSG are set to appoint Benfica technical director Pedro Marques as part of their new-look football structure.

The esteemed journalist, writing in The Athletic and on his X account, claimed that Marques would be employed by FSG and utilise his expertise to attract global talent.

“Pedro Marques appointment to key role in new FSG set-up close to being confirmed,” Ornstein wrote on his social media account.

“Benfica technical director another recruit by Liverpool owners after Michael Edwards (CEO of football). 41yo has strong reputation + seen as big coup.”

Who is Pedro Marques?

Marques started off at Sporting Lisbon in 2004, working across coaching, performance analysis and recruitment.

In 2010, he joined Manchester City as a first team analyst, where he worked with former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward.

Marques then switched to a role at City Football Group (CFG), Manchester City’s owners, where he held a coaching and analysis lead post.

In 2018, Marques moved to Benfica and became their youth technical director, where he became familiar to Liverpool during their talks to sign Darwin Nunez in 2022.

Now, it looks as though the Portuguese is set for FSG, where he’ll no doubt play a big part in operations involving Liverpool as they begin life without Klopp at the helm.
