Jeanne Du Barry trailer and release date

Johnny Depp‘s highly anticipated return to movies arrives courtesy of the historical period drama Jeanne Du Barry, directed by French actress and filmmaker Maïwenn, who co-stars alongside Johnny in the titular role of a working-class woman seeking a better life.

Using her cunning and intelligence, she begins to rise in class and gain access to the higher levels of society, enjoying the benefits and indulgences that come with it.

It’s made easier by her budding relationship with King Louis XV (played by Johnny), the King of France, whom she reminds of the wonders of a life he’s grown jaded with.

Falling deeply in love, their new union causes a scandal in the high courts when she moves to Versailles to be by his side, always in eyesight.

The film looks fantastic, the trailer promising luxurious production design and sensational performances from its leads. Johnny’s last movie was the acclaimed 2020 biographical drama Minimata, so we’re hoping for less of a return to form but simply a return.

Audiences don’t have to wait long for it either. A release date is set for Thursday, May 2nd 2024, and you can pre-order tickets from Fathom Events.

Is Jeanne Du Barry in English?

No, Jeanne Du Barry is in French. It’s a co-production between France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, but the actors all speak in French, including Johnny, who did speak the language before filming.

The movie’s world premiere took place at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last May, the same day it was released in French theaters.

Thanks to a budget of $22.4 million, it was one of the most expensive French movies of last year.

For many, the major draw will be to see Johnny acting again, even if it’s outside of an American production. When speaking with Deadline, he was asked if he feels boycotted by Hollywood in the wake of the aforementioned trial.

“Do I feel a boycott now?” he repeated the question back. “No, not at all. I don’t feel boycotted by Hollywood because I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t have much further need for Hollywood myself.”

Jeanne Du Barry plays in theaters on Thursday, May 2nd 2024.
