'Missed a trick': Tottenham now told they did not pass the ball to £15m player anywhere near enough last night

Tottenham Hotspur have been told that they missed a trick during their draw against West Ham United on Tuesday night, with one player not seeing anywhere near enough of the ball.

Spurs are still trying to find their best form once again. They got off to a brilliant start at the London Stadium, with Brennan Johnson breaking the deadlock in the opening minutes.

But West Ham were able to equalise before the break. And the best chance in the second-half fell to Michail Antonio, who failed to properly test Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham were unable to produce the free-flowing attacking football which saw them take the Premier League by storm at the start of the campaign. And they have been criticised for not working out how to get at West Ham.

Tottenham told £15 million star needed more of the ball against West Ham

It was Timo Werner who set up Johnson for the opener. The German ran at Vladimir Coufal before cutting the ball back for Johnson to tap the ball home.

And speaking on ESPN, Craig Burley suggested that Tottenham made a real mistake letting the 28-year-old drift out of the game when he had been causing Coufal problems.

“I would call this flat. Lively early from Spurs, particularly Werner. And I think they missed a trick there, because he was quiet, apart from the first 20 minutes,” he said.

“Timo Werner was quite quiet. And I think they missed a trick, because he had the beating of Coufal when they had him one on one. He absolutely had the beating of him. They didn’t utilise that one on one, that isolation of those two players, and letting him run at the West Ham right-back.”

Permanent move surely on the horizon

Werner has been a very decent signing during his time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His loan move seemed to come out of nowhere.

Expectations were not too high given his struggles at Chelsea and the fact that he was not exactly pulling up trees with RB Leipzig this season. Had he been doing so, he would not have been available on loan.

But he has now scored two goals and contributed three assists in the Premier League. With that, it would be understandable if Tottenham did take up the £15 million option to sign Werner this summer.

Clearly, he is someone who can make an impact – provided that he gets enough of the ball.
