'What I would say is...': Middlesbrough gem gives honest verdict on future as he enters final year

In a recent interview, Isaiah Jones has dropped a subtle hint on his future at Middlesbrough.

Jones has been at the Riverside outfit since 2019, joining from non-League outfit Tooting and Mitcham United.

Across his near five-year stay at the club, the 24-year-old has racked up 120 appearances, netting 11 times whilst laying on 17 assists.

Having enjoyed another productive campaign under the stewardship of Michael Carrick, he won’t be short of interest in the summer, given his contract expires next year.

Discussions over a renewal are underway and those talks have been described as ‘positive’, according to TeesideLive.

Though, as it stands, Boro remain in a position where they might need to sell him on this summer if indeed a new deal can’t be agreed upon.

Jones is a key member of Carrick’s squad and the club will be desperate to tie him down to a new contract.

Asked about his future on Teeside, Jones said: “What I would say is that this is my home right now. I enjoy every minute of playing here and playing in front of these fans. I’ve got 12 months left, but that doesn’t mean I want to leave.

“I enjoy playing here and I love the fans. We’ll look at my contract situation in the summer and see what happens. I leave that side of things (conversations with the club) more to my agent and just focus on the football for the time being.”

It appears his intention is very much to remain at Middlesbrough, though, like any professional, he’ll want the best deal for him and his family.

Middlesbrough must keep Isaiah Jones

During Carrick’s 18-month tenure at the club, he’s had to contend with some big departures, namely Chuba Akpom, last season’s top scorer, and Morgan Rogers.

That has certainly had a big impact on their promotion hopes this year, so they can’t afford to lose another in the summer.

Jones has the highest average match rating across the entire squad this season, as per WhoScored, and is the third top scorer with six goals.

He also averages the joint-most dribbles per game, which evinces just how influential he is in the attacking phase.

Notwithstanding that, if Boro fail to agree on a new contract with the all-action winger, they can’t allow his contract to run down, they must sanction a sale in the summer in order to reinvest in the squad.
