Lewis Hall obligation to buy explained: Loan details, cost and if he’ll permanently join Newcastle this summer

Lewis Hall is currently on loan to Newcastle United with an obligation to buy from Chelsea. Here’s everything you need to know about the deal.

The youngster hasn’t exactly had his dream debut season at St James’ Park. The Chelsea loanee has struggled for game time under Eddie Howe.

Which seems strange. Amid a sea of injuries this season, the uber-talented youngster, who also is a lifelong Newcastle United fan, looked more than destined to get first-team opportunities.

Nevertheless – a player for the future no doubt. Or is he? The Magpies have an obligation to buy Lewis Hall, but will this still be going ahead?

Lewis Hall loan details

Hall arrived from Chelsea on loan with an obligation to buy for £28m plus £7m of add-ons – with both sides viewing it as a permanent transfer.

This was ultimately done down to Newcastle’s FFP struggles, having seen numerous big-money acquisitions join Howe’s ranks with Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Sandro Tonali all purchased in the calendar year of 2024.

The initial £28 million transfer fee did not count against FFP regulations until the loan is made permanent ahead of the 24-25 season.

The only cost to Newcastle is the portion of Hall’s wages which they have taken on from Chelsea – which was minimal for the then 18-year-old.

How much will Newcastle pay for Lewis Hall?

Newcastle paid around £4 million to loan the 19-year-old for the season so will have to pay another £24 million for the move to become a permanent one.

The £7m of add-ons will then be paid across future seasons depending on whether Hall fits the criteria included in the contract.

Will he join Newcastle United permanently this summer?

Yes, it appears Hall will become Newcastle United’s first permanent signing of the 2024 summer transfer window.

Newcastle’s £28 million obligation to make Hall’s loan move permanent is subject to performance-related criteria.

A lack of opportunities would suggest that Hall has not met that criteria, however, The Gazette reported the clause will likely be triggered as it is subject to Newcastle’s overall performance in the Premier League – rather than the individual player’s.

Despite Hall rarely playing, Howe said: “He’s getting closer [to triggering the clause] with every game. While I’m not on top of that on a daily basis, I’m sure he’s very close.”

This is somewhat of a problem for Newcastle, with frivolous spending in the summer looking less likely due to serious FFP problems.

Nevertheless, they’ll have to manoeuvre this, as it appears Hall is Newcastle United Training Centre-bound for good.
