Arsene Wenger admits ‘incredible' £30m Arsenal star plays just like Dennis Bergkamp

Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger has now admitted that one the club’s current players reminds him a lot of Dennis Bergkamp.

Whilst Mikel Arteta’s side have already surrendered their chance to repeat the ‘Invincibles’ feat managed by Dennis Bergkamp and his teammates this season, they will need to at least pedal that mantra until the campaign ends.

Arsenal now need to go on a flawless run of wins, starting with a date against Luton Town at the Emirates tonight.

Rob Edwards’ side have now scored in 18 Premier League games in a row, a remarkable run for a newly-promoted side.

And although Mikel Arteta may need to make changes to his side to keep things fresh, he certainly won’t be taking Luton lightly.

Arsene Wenger was previously a master at overcoming such ties, and he must have a lot of admiration for how Arteta is leading his team today.

And when recently speaking in an interview with another Arsenal icon, Freddie Ljungberg, Wenger was asked if he saw any likeness from his era in today’s team.

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard reminds him of Dennis Bergkamp

Freddie Ljungberg asked if perhaps Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli reminded of himself and Robert Pires for example.

And with very little hesistation, the former Arsenal boss quickly pointed to Martin Odegaard and Dennis Bergkamp.

Ljungberg asked: “Do you see any echoes of your team in today’s team? For example, let’s say: Saka-Martinelli, Pires-Ljungberg.”

Wenger replied: “Yeah, there’s a lot. Odegaard-Bergkamp, you know?”

A fascinating comparison, considering the two were tasked with very different things at the club.

Yes, ‘incredible‘ Odegaard does have the maverick and creative qualities of Bergkamp, but so much of his game is now focused around pressing, too.

Both are unique talents, and if Odegaard can go on to replicate the success that Bergkamp had at Arsenal, then Wenger and all fans of the club will surely be delighted.

The £30m-midfielder is yet to lift a major honour with the club, and would probably settle for just half of the Dutchman’s three league titles and four FA Cups.

All that being said, Arsenal could actually break a Premier League goalscoring record against Luton tonight.
