Report: Mikel Arteta told Arsenal coaches he was going to sign 25-year-old from Chelsea, it didn’t happen

Reports have claimed that Mikel Arteta was absolutely convinced he was going to complete the signing of one player from Chelsea last summer.

According to ESPN, the Arsenal boss was even privately telling some of his coaches that it was a done deal, however it did not come to fruition.

Chelsea saw a busy transfer window take place last summer, with a huge turnover of players who were once key to the club.

Chelsea spent and sold big last summer

This was to make way for new signings, including club-record buy Moises Caicedo.

One of the players who moved on who many had expected never would was Mason Mount, who made the move to Manchester United before this campaign got underway.

He has endured a rough first campaign for his new side, only scoring his first goal for them last time out against Brentford.

However, Chelsea fans will be fearing the worst when he plays his first game at Stamford Bridge since leaving the Blues tomorrow night.

Arteta thought he had signed Mount

While he made the move up to Manchester, the Red Devils were certainly not the only side interested in bringing him in over the summer.

Another one of those were Arsenal, where he would likely be taking part in a title race right now.

Arteta seemed to be keen on getting a deal done, with it now being claimed that he was telling some people at the club it was a done deal, only to see it blow up in his face.

The Gunners did complete a move for his good friend Declan Rice, who Chelsea had been linked with signing for a number of years before he ended up at the Emirates.

With Mount likely to start from the bench tomorrow night, it will be interesting to see the reaction he gets from Chelsea fans if he is introduced into the action.
