‘I promise’: Nedum Onuoha shares behind-the-scenes reason why Man City have been so successful on the pitch

Nedum Onuoha has highlighted one behind-the-scenes factor as to why Manchester City have been so successful on the pitch in recent years.

Throughout Pep Guardiola’s reign in charge of the Manchester club, City have been a dominant force in English football in terms of the trophies they’ve won.

Their previous season saw them complete a historical Treble by winning their fifth Premier League title in six years, as well as the FA Cup and their first Champions League.

With the Blues on the hunt to add even more silverware to their cabinet this time around, one pundit and former City player has picked out one underrated aspect of why the club have been so successful.

Speaking in the second episode of the Together: Treble Winners documentary series on Netflix, Onuoha had this to say on the matter.

He said: “There’s some really tough times that come within a season and from the outside people think because you have talent you’ll be able to achieve it but history shows there’s so many clubs out there where they have good players but they don’t have that harmony and the unity to go out and be successful together.

“But as far as Man City goes, the players, the staff, everybody’s pulling in the same direction and they actually like each other, which I promise you goes a long, long way.”

Back in February last year, in the middle of City’s Treble-winning season, Guardiola spoke about how his squad’s togetherness and chemistry was able to stay at the same high level despite going through a run of poor results.

Specifically, the Spaniard said this: “Always I handle incredible human beings and incredible football players since I’ve been here. I don’t complain once. Everyone makes mistakes – I’m the first, everyone has their own personalities and try to live together. More or less these years we have been perfectly together, players, club, staff, backroom staff. The mood is really good and has been for many years.”

Having then gone on to win three major titles, this backs up Onuoha’s point about how valuable it is for a squad to have a close relationship with each other, as well as having a positive relationship with the staff around them.
