Thatcham holds its first 10k race

Thatcham is holding its first 10k race this month.

The Thatcham 10k is taking place on Sunday (April 7).

It will begin at The Moors Playing Field and the route will incorporate Thatcham’s fishing lakes, the Nature Discovery Centre, Kennet and Avon Canal towpath and a small section back to the finish along Ilkley Way and The Moors.

The initiative has been in the planning process since last summer.

It was put together by a community-based committee, led by town councillor Ben Schiffer-Harte (Lib Dem, Thatcham North East) following a town council offer to support community groups in organising new events.

It will raise money for the mayor of Thatcham Mark Lillycrop’s chosen charities; PALS West Berkshire and Sport in Mind.

Mr Pemberton said: “It feels great to achieve this goal of creating the first 10k running event in Thatcham.

“This event will be a significant milestone for Thatcham, offering increased opportunities for experienced runners and those wanting to improve their physical fitness alike.

“To engage in a popular physical activity event, while also fostering a greater sense of community and inclusion among not just those taking part but everyone involved in the planning and spectators and visitors alike.”

He added: “Every single member of the 10k race committee has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to create something to rally the residents of Thatcham and have a positive impact on the wellbeing of the town, hopefully for future years as well.

“This planning has taken a number of months, working with various partners and supporters to ensure everything runs smoothly.”

The event has been supported by Thatcham Town Council and Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre.

And it is sponsored by local businesses Mettal UK, Roots Estate Agency, GHE Solar, Bella Luna Restaurant, Francis Joinery and Howden Insurance.
