Arsenal did something no other PL team has done before in record-breaking Luton win

Arsenal broke a Premier League record during their 2-0 win against Luton Town at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

Arsenal hardly produced their most scintillating performance of the season so far against Luton Town, but they were still able to make Premier League history.

The Gunners’ lack of fluency can perhaps be attributed to the number of changes Mikel Arteta made to his starting XI for this match. Five fresh faces were brought into the line up, following Arsenal’s exertions against Manchester City on Sunday.

Of that quintet to come into the team, Emile Smith Rowe was able to produce the most impressive performance. Smith Rowe caught the eye of Arsenal fans as he played a key role in each of the north London club’s two goals.

At the other end of the scale, Oleksandr Zinchenko failed to make a particularly strong case for the argument that he should come back into the starting XI on a more regular basis going forward.

Ultimately, Arsenal played as well as they needed to to get the job done against the struggling Hatters. In the context of the challenges to come, with intense and highly pressurised fixtures set to come thick and fast over the course of the run-in, the Gunners being able to pick up three points without ever having to hit top gear is no bad thing.

Despite the slightly reserved nature of this display, though, Arteta’s side were still able to create a new piece of Premier League history. As reported by The Athletic, with this 2-0 triumph, Arsenal took their tally of goals against newly promoted sides in the Premier League this season to 25 – no other side has ever scored more against the three newly promoted clubs in a single campaign before.

On top of this success, Kai Havertz also recorded a personal best in Premier League terms in this match. With his assist for Martin Odegaard’s opening goal, the German took his end product numbers to a figure higher than he has ever achieved in the top flight of English football before across his previous spell at Chelsea.

There will certainly be tougher tests than this to come for Arsenal, but all that matters at this stage in the season is racking up points. All attention in north London will now turn to Saturday’s trip to face Brighton and Hove Albion, when the Gunners will have to find a way to win again.
