Stat concerning 22-year-old Tottenham player after West Ham draw shouldn't go under radar - opinion

Tottenham Hotspur were rightly lauded for the deal to sign James Maddison in the summer transfer window, with many hugely impressed by how influential the 27-year-old quickly became to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

It is easy to forget now but James Maddison did not appear to be at the centre of some incredible bidding war following Leicester’s relegation.

But many went on to suggest that Maddison had been the best player in the Premier League in the opening weeks of this season, with Tottenham leading the way in the early stages.

Maddison has since been sidelined for some time with injury. And it is probably fair to say that he has not yet found his best form again. But Spurs have been treated to more than a fair share of glimpses of the magic Maddison is capable of.

And with that, there is one statistic concerning his Tottenham teammate which should not go under the radar.

Brennan Johnson also signed for Spurs last summer. The Welshman arrived off the back of a promising first year in the top-flight with Nottingham Forest. But unlike Maddison, he was not someone who had really proven himself over a long period. So it is surely fair to say that he was signed with one eye on the future.

Brennan Johnson statistic shouldn’t go unnoticed

Johnson has come in for criticism at times. And it is clear that he is not yet the finished article. However, following his goal for Tottenham in their draw with West Ham on Tuesday night, the 22-year-old now has five goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season.

Maddison meanwhile, is on four goals and seven assists. So Johnson deserves huge credit for making such a significant impact in his first season with the club – particularly as he arrived after pre-season had ended.

Tottenham appear to have signed a gem

Of course, he plays in a more advanced role than Maddison. And he has made more appearances. But according to Whoscored, Maddison has actually been on the pitch for more minutes.

Only Heung-min Son and Richarlison have been directly involved in more goals than Johnson in the Premier League. That is an outstanding effort for someone who has made 16 starts.

The fact that Johnson is now ahead of Maddison for goal involvements suggests that his season has been an overwhelming success for the youngster.
