US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has begun a visit to China which is expected to last several days.

She landed in the southern Chinese industrial heartland of Guangzhou on Thursday afternoon, Chinese state television reported. Yellen said she wanted to meet representatives from US companies and the Chinese government.

"During my time in China, I’ll focus on advancing a healthy economic relationship that provides a level playing field for American workers and firms," she wrote on the X platform, formerly Twitter, before her arrival.

A meeting with Premier Li Qiang is also planned for Sunday in Beijing. Yellen's department is responsible for financial and economic policy.

Her visit comes just a few days after an almost two-hour phone call between US President Joe Biden and China's head of state and government Xi Jinping, which the US side described as "open and constructive."

The leaders of the world's two largest economies also discussed their economic rivalry. President Biden was said to have expressed continued concern about the People's Republic of China's unfair trade policies and that his administration would continue to take the necessary precautions to prevent advanced technologies from being used to undermine US national security.

Xi, for his part, noted in the phone call that those US measures were suppressing China's development in trade and technology. Xi reportedly told Biden that China is prepared to cooperate for the benefit of both sides, but will not stand by while the US keeps China's development in check.
