'Made me eat my words': Theo Walcott admits he was completely wrong about 24-year-old Arsenal man

Theo Walcott has now admitted that he was completely wrong with what he said about one Arsenal player in the past.

Mikel Arteta’s side have made a habit of changing perceptions this season, you need only look back to January to prove so.

The whole winter transfer window was dominated by talk of Arsenal needing to sign a striker who could finish chances, otherwise their season was over.

Ivan Toney’s name was mentioned again and again by fans and pundits, but Arsenal ultimately decided to hold firm.

Mikel Arteta believed he had the solutions in his squad already, and he was definitely correct.

Arsenal’s scoring run since then has been nothing short of sensational, with perhaps Kai Havertz stepping up most significantly as a false nine.

The Arsenal manager didn’t seem prepared to start Eddie Nketiah in the most important games whilst Gabriel Jesus was absent, and well, the rest is history.

That being said, Theo Walcott has now admitted he has had to ‘eat his words’ in regard to Havertz’s time at Arsenal.

Theo Walcott admits he got it completely wrong about Kai Havertz at Arsenal

Speaking on 5 Live Sport last night, Theo Walcott compared the German’s positional change at Arsenal to that of Ross Barkley at Luton Town.

And whilst Barkley has dropped deeper to find success, Havertz has been restored to his most natural role up top.

Walcott explained: “I would have expected him [Barkley] to be a number 10 as well, but now he’s actually found his position and it’s very similar to Havertz, who I have been a little bit critical of at the start of the season, not really knowing his position.

“And he’s made me eat my words really, because he’s scoring a lot more goals and a lot more goal involvements as well. I think he has eight goals this season.”

And Walcott is correct, Havertz does now have eight goals this season.

Moreover, with his four assists also added in, his 12 goal contributions in his 29 Arsenal games are more than he ever managed in a single season with Chelsea.

The 24-year-old has made remarkable progress this season, and has well and truly justified Arteta’s early season defiance.

All that being said, Rob Edwards thought Arsenal could do one thing better than any team in the league after watching last night’s game.
