Report: Newcastle now have £4m Championship star on their radar to replace Karius

The injuries at Newcastle United have not limited themselves to outfield players this season.

Indeed, Eddie Howe was said to have been crestfallen following Nick Pope’s dislocated shoulder back in December, such is his importance to this Newcastle team.

While Martin Dubravka has impressed at times while standing in for Pope, there remain some doubts as to his suitability as a regular starter.

Dubravka hasn’t been without his absence himself, forcing Howe to turn to the rarely-seenLoris Karius, too.

Though Howe is believed to rate the former Liverpool stopper, Karius is far from certain to stay at St James’ Park beyond the expiration of his contract this summer.

Karius is believed to be attracting interest from Italy and could well need replacing in the squad as third-choice goalkeeper.

Now, it seems Newcastle have eyes on a potential replacement.

Newcastle identify potential Loris Karius transfer replacement

According to The Daily Telegraph, Newcastle have Middlesbrough goalkeeper Seny Dieng on their radar.

The 29-year-old is said to have caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs after moving to Boro from QPR last summer.

Crystal Palace are also thought to be interested, while promotion-chasing Ipswich Town could also be keen.

Boro, for their part, are reportedly looking for double the £2m they paid for him last summer.

Newcastle might need a No.2 this summer

While spending £4m on a third-choice ‘keeper during a time in which FFP restrictions continue to loom may not make a huge amount of sense, Newcastle may even need to replace Dubravka soon.

It was even claimed earlier this month by journalist Chris Waugh that goalkeeper was one of the positions Howe was looking to strengthen.

With that in mind, why not spend a bit of money to bolster ranks behind Pope? £4m for that looks reasonably cheap.
