'It was missing': Eddie Howe says something has returned to Newcastle which is really important

Newcastle United head to Fulham this weekend with some confidence.

While an injury crisis to have derailed Newcastle’s challenge for consistency all season simply refuses to subside, Eddie Howe’s side have broadly returned from the international break in good spirits.

They proved their capability to fight through adversity by claiming a dramatic comeback win against West Ham at St James’ Park on Saturday and would surely have beaten Everton on Tuesday had it not been for Paul Dummett’s mistake.

Though things haven’t been perfect, the performances are at least getting back up to an acceptable level.

With that in mind, there is fresh hope emerging in regards to Newcastle’s chances for European qualification.

They are in a battle with the Hammers and Brighton for seventh spot now and could be finding their feet just at the right time, albeit the seemingly constant spate of injuries are only likely to complicate matters further.

Indeed, Howe has certainly been impressed with what he’s seen of late.

Eddie Howe names exactly what Newcastle have found again recently

Reflecting on the intense double-header against West Ham and Everton, Howe said of recent performances (via The Northern Echo): “I think the general attitude and the way we are trying to play is back. The identity is clear.

“You can see from our performances what we are trying to deliver. For a spell, I think it was missing.”

Newcastle could go on a big run between now and the end of the season

Injuries and consistency have been a big issue this season, so it’s important not to get too excited.

Still, there’s every chance Newcastle could embark on a positive run between now and the end of the campaign.

Tottenham and an inconsistent Manchester United team – who Howe has already been twice this season – are the only teams above Newcastle who they meet from here on in.

Take those recent performances into that run of games and perhaps Howe can finish the season strongly, underlining that he is indeed the right man for the job.

Newcastle do look to be finding their feet again and that obvious attitude to their play would suggest they are still playing for the manager.
