Jamie Carragher shares what Jurgen Klopp did that ‘made the difference’ for Liverpool vs Sheffield United

Liverpool made life more difficult than it needed to be against Sheffield United this evening.

The Reds knew that they’d have to win to haul themselves back to the top of the Premier League table on Thursday.

Things started relatively well, with Darwin Nunez causing trouble and putting Liverpool ahead with a freak goal. But things soon unravelled.

The Reds were masters of their own downfall as they sleepwalked into letting United back into the game. An own goal from Conor Bradley was unlucky, but was no less than the visitors deserved.

Thankfully, Jurgen Klopp took action. Mohamed Salah wasn’t happy to be subbed, but he couldn’t argue too much as Liverpool went chasing the game. And, with the three points in the bag, Reds legend Jamie Carragher praised Klopp’s changes.

Jamie Carragher praises Jurgen Klopp

Klopp has often been bold with his changes this season. With Liverpool boasting fire power from the bench, he always has the possibility for positive changes.

And that’s exactly what happened this evening. It wasn’t the substitutes who got the Reds back in front, withLuis Diaz combining with Alexis Mac Allister.

However, the move really came from Andy Robertson, who added fresh impetus down the Liverpool left.

Once again, Klopp’s substitutions had paid off. And taking to X after the game, Carragher praised the Reds manager for utilising the five sub rule.

“Once again this season the Liverpool subs make the difference, Klopp has utilised the 5 sub rule better than anyone,” raved the pundit.

Who did Jurgen Klopp bring on

Before the game, Liverpool were given a boost with the news that Curtis Jones was set to be available. It was great to see the 23-year-old back on the pitch for minute tonight. We’ve missed him.

Jones wasn’t the first substitute onto the pitch, though. That honour – as it often does – went to Harvey Elliott, with Robertson coming on at the same time, around 60 minutes.

13 minutes later, Jurgen made another double swap. Cody Gakpo came on – and eventually got his goal – with Jones entering as well.

Job done for Liverpool and job done for Klopp who earnt his corn tonight.
