‘What is going on?’… Ally McCoist dumbfounded by one Man Utd player v Chelsea

Manchester United’s clash away at Chelsea got off to an awful start with the Red Devils going 2-0 down inside the first half an hour.

For a moment, it looked like it might get even worse for Manchester United. Chelsea poured forward on a counter attack looking to add a third, with Nicolas Jackson skipping past Casemiro as if he wasn’t there.

Casemiro might as well have been invisible. He made no effort to chase Jackson, strolling back towards his own penalty box.

Fortunately Chelsea’s attack broke down. Casemiro’s lack of fight was, however, bemusing and concerning.

Casemiro called out on commentary

TNT Sports co-commentator Ally McCoist was taken aback by Casemiro’s non-contribution, and his lack of fight.

McCoist exclaimed: “He goes past him… what is Casemiro doing there? What is going on?”

Casemiro has struggled through the season, and towards the end of the half he was in another similar position with Cole Palmer running at him.

McCoist remarked: “He needs that like a hole in the head.”

Last season Casemiro was a titan on both sides of the ball for Manchester United, but this time around it has been a different story.

Even though United’s gung-ho tactics have left him over-exposed at times, Casemiro has not been the same player.

The 28th minute incident which incurred McCoist’s ire was a case in point. He doesn’t have the legs to race around the pitch and close players down. In this case, he didn’t even make the effort.

Casemiro numbers v Chelsea

Casemiro was substituted in the 75th minute for Scott McTominay. He was a little fortunate to last that long.

As he was being taken off, McCoist commented: “No real surprise there. He looked a little bit off I felt in the first half, Casemiro. He got going a little bit in the second half.”

A crazy end to the game saw United contrive to absolutely blow it, losing the game 4-3 in stoppage time.

Here is a look at Casemiro’s statistics from the contest.
