Instant verdict on Mason Mount performance for Man Utd v Chelsea, as pundit makes prediction

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount endured an unhappy return to Stamford Bridge to take on former club Chelsea.

Chelsea fans made clear their displeasure with Mason Mount, booing his every touch of the ball at Stamford Bridge.

Mount was introduced as a second half substitute, brought on with Manchester United 3-2 up. It looked like he was ready to pile it on.

Disastrously, Manchester United blew it, losing 4-3 after conceding two stoppage time goals.

Mason Mount return to Stamford Bridge in numbers

Mason Mount was introduced in the 86th minute, although there were 10 minutes of stoppage time played, fatefully for Manchester United.

Here is a look at the numbers from his brief performance…

  • 100% Pass Completion – 11 of 11
  • 17 Touches
  • 2 Tackles Won
  • 2 Ball Recoveries

Mount did well to keep possession amid the booing from home supporters, keeping his composure.

If there is one complaint, it is that he did not close Cole Palmer down quickly enough for Chelsea’s winner. You could level that at other players, but Mount was closest to him. It would be unfair to say it was his fault though.

Mount looked despondent at the final whistle, and who could blame him. That’s two late defeats he has just been a part of.

Ben Thornley gives verdict on Mason Mount performance

Former academy player Ben Thornley spoke to MUTV after the match and gave his thoughts on how Mason Mount performed.

Thornley said: “The only thing I called was that Mason Mount was going to come on and score a winner.

“And he looked really confident when he came on, to the extent the manager might be thinking about playing him in the game against Liverpool.”

With injuries and tired legs, there may well be an opportunity for Mount to make his first start of 2024.

Thornley issued a warning, adding: “They will have to cut out the mistakes. I mean, this is a Chelsea side that is, I would say, very below par.”
