Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool there's a 'grave mistake' they could make when facing Everton later this month

Jamie Carragher has suggested Liverpool could make a “grave mistake” towards the end of this month.

Jurgen Klopp’s fairytale Anfield ending appears to be staying the course after the Reds picked up a vital three points against Sheffield United on Thursday evening.

The result maintains Liverpool’s two-point advantage at the top of the Premier League table and on track to end the German’s tenure on a high.

Unfortunately for Everton, Liverpool still have to travel to Goodison Park before the season concludes.

The fixture is set to take place on the 24 April. And, unfortunately, it feels as if a lot will be riding on it for both sides.

Jamie Carragher, of course, is desperate for Klopp to end his time at Liverpool on a high. Yet, the Reds legend has sent a stark warning to the German before the Goodison Park trip.

Writing in his weekly column for The Telegraph, Carragher said: “Before both games against United this season – the first was a 0-0 draw at Anfield – I cannot help but feel even some Liverpool fans fell into the trap of believing they would only have to beat an inconsistent and inferior United team rather than worry about the history and tradition of the match.”

He added: “The same might apply when Liverpool go to Goodison later this month. That would be a grave mistake.

“Since Klopp has been in England, Everton have been generally dreadful, but they have still been able to take points from Liverpool.”

What is Everton’s recent record against Liverpool like?

Unfortunately, Everton hold the record for the longest run without a win in the Merseyside Derby. The Toffees failed to find a victory for 23 consecutive games between 2011 and 2021.

Historically, the Red side of Merseyside has always had the upper hand. Since the two sides first met in 1894, Everton have won 83, drawn 86 and lost 125 matches.

Recent history hasn’t been on the Blues’ side. Liverpool have won four of the last five meetings, including a 2-0 win back in October. Last season, there was some rest bite after Frank Lampard’s side ground out a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. However, the season before, the Reds ran out 6-1 aggregate winners.

With Sean Dyche’s side struggling to find goals, let alone wins, something drastic must change before Klopp’s men make the trip across Stanley Park.
