‘Really distracted’: Theo Walcott makes ‘sad’ Everton relegation prediction after Newcastle draw

Theo Walcott has been discussing the relegation battle, of which Everton, his former employers, are yet again a part of.

Although this sad decline into a side perennially battling the drop occurred after his departure, he was one of many misinformed acquisitions who did little to boost the Toffees before eventually leaving for nothing.

However, his time at the club is not looked back on with complete disdain, likely due to the horrors that have unfolded since.

And yet, he remains positive as we enter the final two months of the Premier League season.

Theo Walcott makes Everton relegation prediction

Speaking to BBC Sport, the former Everton winger would offer his prediction ahead of the relegation run-in, which truly kickstarts this weekend as Burnley travel to Goodison Park.

A win would be crucial in distancing the Toffees from the pack, whereas a disastrous defeat would see them pulled back into the mire.

Regardless, Walcott still thinks his previous employers will have enough to escape the drop.

He noted: I think they are bracing themselves [for a points deduction] and I think as well that’s probably hindering performances. I think they’re really distracted and as players you can’t be.

‘I think it was a big point at Newcastle, but I am wary that with the new stadium as well, they need to be in the Premier League and it’s going to be quite sad to see if they do go down.

‘But I do feel that they will just about have enough, even if they get a points deduction. I just feel like with the experience they’ve got, they’ve got a lot of experience in that dressing room still and they’ve been in these relegation battles for years, so they should be ready for it again.’

Everton are in the best position of the relegation battlers

Discounting a potential new points deduction which could completely swing the competition, at this moment in time Everton’s destiny remains in their own hands.

They are four points away from 18th-placed Luton Town with a game in hand, and across their final eight league matches, five of those are against relegation-threatened outfits.

As aforementioned, Burnley marks the start of this run, but following that they will also welcome Brentford, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest to Goodison Park too, with a trip to the Hatters also on the horizon.

So, not only are they in a strong current position in the table, but they will also face everyone around them, meaning that if they can pick up some points at last they will surely be safe.

Fortunately, it is all in their hands. So if they are to go down, regardless of another deduction, Everton will only have themselves to blame…
