'I mean that': What Chris Wilder said to Liverpool staff member as he left Anfield last night

Liverpool narrowly avoided a horrible result in the Premier League title race against Sheffield United on Thursday.

A fantastic 76th minute strike from Alexis Mac Allister put Liverpool back in front after a freakish own goal from Conor Bradley pegged the Reds back and made it 1-1.

Cody Gakpo then put the icing on the cake with a fine header in the 90th minute.

Having been 14 minutes away from an exceptional point against Liverpool, you might have presumed that Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was livid as he left Anfield on Thursday night.

However, the 56-year-old actually left Liverpool with a positive message as he and Sheffield United headed back to Bramall Lane…

What Chris Wilder said to Liverpool staff member as he left Anfield last night

Well, the man from Stocksbridge delivered an eight-word message to one Liverpool staff member as he left Anfield last night.

Wilder was heard saying: “I hope you win it, I mean that.”

Clearly, the Sheffield United boss prefers Liverpool to the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City!

It is not actually the first time that Wilder has praised the Reds.

After his Sheffield United side suffered a 2-0 defeat at Anfield back in 2020, the Yorkshireman admitted that he loves everything about Liverpool, and congratulated Jurgen Klopp’s side for their professionalism.

Wilder told TNT Sports (known as BT Sport at the time): “Thankfully we’ve played Liverpool twice. I wish Jurgen and Liverpool all the best, I love everything about them, the way they go about, tactical and technical players.”

Clearly, despite Wilder and Klopp having a war of words in previous years over the five substitutions debate, there is a lot of respect towards Liverpool from the Sheffield United side.

Huge win

Such is the tense nature of this title race and the immense quality of Manchester City and Arsenal, Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League might have even been over had the scoreline finished 1-1 last night.

However, Mac Allister did his best Steven Gerrard impression to rifle a superb shot into the top corner just when his side needed a moment of magic, and ensured Liverpool moved back to the top of the pile on 70 points.

After also delivering a crucial assist for Mohamed Salah’s winner against Brighton, and scoring in the 1-1 draw against Manchester City, the Argentina international is truly stepping up for Liverpool in this enthralling title race.
