'Always special': Virgil Van Dijk says which derby matters more - Everton or Manchester United

Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk has revealed whether the Merseyside Derby is more important than fixtures against Manchester United.

The 32-year-old has returned to his best this season and has spearheaded Jurgen Klopp’s side towards what would be a memorable league title.

It’s a very different story for Everton and Sean Dyche. The Blues are without a win in 2024 and could be docked further points next week.

Klopp’s men make the trip across Stanley Park at the end of the month and Van Dijk has opened up on what he thinks of the rivalry.

Virgil Van Dijk quizzed by Gary Lineker on Merseyside Derby

Talking on the Rest is Football Podcast, Gary Lineker asked the Dutchman what derby matters most.

Lineker asked: “You talked about that first game against Everton. Obviously, that derby is quite special, although it seems to be very one-sided. Which one matters most? Everton, United or City?

Van Dijk replied: “The Merseyside Derby is always special, and it’s always tough, it’s intense, it’s a game on its own, and they [Everton] have been doing much better than the beginning years when I joined the club; it’s always difficult especially when we play away.

“As a player, you want to be part of these games. It gives you an extra boost and means a little bit more. But the other games, as well, because everyone will watch those games.”

When is Everton’s next fixture against Liverpool?

Everton host the Reds towards the end of April in a clash that could have enormous implications for both teams.

Jamie Carragher has even warned Liverpool ahead of their visit to Goodison Park. He said: “I cannot help but feel even some Liverpool fans fell into the trap of believing they would only have to beat an inconsistent and inferior United team rather than worry about the history and tradition of the match.

“The same might apply when Liverpool go to Goodison later this month. That would be a grave mistake.”

Everton’s recent record in the derby has been woeful, with Liverpool winning four of the last five meetings. Unfortunately for Dyche, something needs to change this time around. Three points on April 24 would mark one of the most famous and essential victories in the club’s recent history.
