'Exceptional': Fulham midfielder claims there's something Nottingham Forest never get enough credit for

Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney has admitted something about Nottingham Forest blew him away earlier in the week.

Nottingham Forest were able to get three valuable points on the board on Tuesday when they faced Fulham at the City Ground.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side have faced a lot of external frustrations over the last few weeks following their points deductions after breaching PSR.

And that four-point deduction had seen Forest fall down into the relegation zone of the Premier League, but they quickly pulled themselves out of the danger.

A draw against Crystal Palace on the weekend saw Forest climb out of the bottom three, but their win on Tuesday – with Luton Town’s defeat to Arsenal – saw Nuno’s men open a three-point cushion.

It was a stunning first half from Forest which saw goals from Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-Whites put the Cottagers to the sword.

The latter of those three goalscorers, Gibbs-White, was picked out for specific praise from one Sky Sports pundit following another dazzling display.

And speaking in the wake of their emphatic defeat against Nuno’s side, Cairney has admitted he was left stunned with what he saw on Tuesday.

Tom Cairney forced to admit he was amazed with what he saw against Forest

The points deduction is not something which went down well at the City Ground, but it seems everyone is now singing from the same hymn sheet now.

What is done is now done and the City Ground will have to get behind their men to help provide them with the edge in their home games.

Players like Gibbs-White will be seen as the individuals who have the ability to drag Forest out of the mess they have found themselves in this season.

Forest put on a clinical display against the Londoners having only racked up 33% of the ball throughout the game.

Nuno’s side only managed to land four shots on Bernd Leno’s goal, but found the back of the net with three of those.

But it seems as if there is something else – on top of some big performances – which Cairney feels helped Forest in the game on Tuesday night.

Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, the 33-year-old revealed what stunned him about playing at the City Ground.

“Forest were very good. The atmosphere was tremendous by the way. You forget how good the City Ground is. The City Ground is exceptional. I don’t think they get the credit they deserve.

“The team responded to that. The place was bouncing. They were very good and we were poor. And three of us got told to warm up after about 10 minutes I think.”

Nuno was also left wowed by the City Ground atmosphere

It seems Cairney was not the only one who was left impressed with the atmosphere which was created at the City Ground.

With seven games remaining to retain their top flight status, Nuno told the media after the game that this is the type of backing his players need from the fans for the remainder of the term.

“So important. We felt it. It was huge. This appeal we have put out for the fans to bring the noise, it helps the players so much.

“But tonight it worked both ways. They saw what we need to be; that we need to fight for every ball and that will bring the fans together and help us.”
