King of the Cup tournament reveals its champions for 2024

Football players of all ages took on the world’s greatest single goal knockout competition on Good Friday in a bid to be crowned King of the Cup 2024.

Though dark clouds loomed over Rectory Meadow in Diss, hundreds of fans young and old took on all comers as the annual fundraiser returned.

The competition’s committee said the tournament, first established in 1991, had once again been a huge success.

“We were glad the weather held off and that it was actually pretty sunny for much of the day,” they said. “It was just a great day again and brilliant to see so many turn out and support King of the Cup.”

A first in the competition’s history saw last year’s adult champion retain his title and take home the winner’s biker jacket after beating 45 competitors.

James Edwards beat another former winner, Kyle Halil, 3-2 in the final.

David Larinovo and Oscar Klimza were victorious in the two junior categories.

“Thank you to everyone who attended and supported us, from the players to the families and food and drink vendors and to the cricket club for opening the bar,” said the committee.

“It has become an annual event that people have certain expectations for and it was great to see a big crowd cheering the players on.”

The day managed to raise £400, which will go to sponsoring Harleston Youth FC’s under-8s Lionesses team.

The committee added: “To be honest, the choice of supporting the under 8s was a no brainer.

“All of us have young kids and we have been keen to support a girls team for a while, so it was a good match.

“We look forward to seeing the King of the Cup logo on their shirt next season and seeing everyone back on Good Friday next year.”
