'Really surprised': Steve Nicol says Jurgen Klopp did something last night that absolutely shocked him

Liverpool might have ended up seeing off Sheffield United to go back top of the table last night but Steve Nicol was still shocked at something Jurgen Klopp did.

The German manager watched his side dig in and see off the resilient Blades, who had equalised through a deflected Gus Hamer effort to make Anfield a touch nervy.

In the end, a stunning strike from Alexis Mac Allister and then a fine header from Cody Gakpo ensured the Reds got over the line and went back to the summit.

Of course, Liverpool didn’t have it all their own way on the night. Indeed, when United equalised, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp quickly scrambled to make some changes.

Among those changes, we saw talisman Mo Salah get hooked off.

And speaking on ESPN about the subs, former Red Steve Nicol admitted he was really shocked by seeing Salah taken off when Liverpool needed a goal.

Steve Nicol shocked by decision to take Mo Salah off

Never one to hide an opinion on matters, Nicol spoke about the decision to take Salah off and admitted his surprise.

“It was hard to see where it was coming from (the second goal). And that’s why I said about Salah. It’s 1-1, you’ve just lost a goal, 60 minutes in, you need a goal. I would have thought Salah’s the guy you leave on because Salah on many occasions, he hasn’t taken part in a lot of games and if he has, he hasn’t done well. But this is a guy that scores goals if nothing else.

“So I was really surprised when he took him off. Now at the end of the day, the subs made a difference and they did, but I wouldn’t have took Salah off,” Nicol said.

In the end, it paid off Klopp as the subs like Andy Robertson and of course, Gakpo, combined to see off the Blades.

Nicol has been quite vocal in criticising Mo Salah as well this season. Indeed, just last week he said the Liverpool man drove him ‘insane’ at times.

So for Nicol to now say he was surprised to see Klopp take him off, seems a bit of an about turn.

Nevertheless, it mattered little and in the end, as is so often the case, Klopp got it right when it mattered.
