Man Utd player was dribbled past twice and won zero tackles vs Chelsea, must be replaced this summer - opinion

On Thursday night, Manchester United were defeated 4-3 by Chelsea. But there was one player who put in an atrocious display.

What a rollercoaster Thursday night was, from 2-0 down, to 3-2 up only to throw it all away in the dying moments of stoppage time, losing 4-3 against Chelsea.

For Manchester United, this result has left Champions League football looking just a step too far away now, with just eight games left and a nine-point gap to make up.

On the night, there were some real standout players, with Alejandro Garnacho grabbing two goals, and Antony getting an assist.

But there was one player who put in a performance that will have left Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe acutely aware of what they have to do this summer.

Casemiro had a horrific night against Chelsea

Back in central midfield from the start, Casemiro was handed the job of being the more defensive of him and Kobbie Mainoo. But he was atrocious.

He was constantly caught out of position, failing to get anywhere near Conor Gallagher and ultimately just putting in a display which is indefensible.

Here are his stats from the game, as per FotMob.

  • 75 minutes
  • 6.6 match rating
  • 84 per cent passing accuracy
  • 55 touches
  • 0 tackles won
  • 1 block
  • 1 clearance
  • 6 recoveries
  • 2 times dribbled past
  • 4 duels lost
  • 4 duels won

We can see here that he was simply outclassed and didn’t have what he needed to deal with Chelsea who broke on the counter relentlessly.

Even the two-dribbled-past stat is generous as he was nowhere near Chelsea players a lot of the time which likely means they didn’t count.

As he has been for much of this season, Casemiro looks as though at 32, his years have caught up with him and is miles off the pace needed.

This makes a replacement this summer to partner Mainoo, of the utmost importance.

Casemiro must be replaced this summer by Manchester United

This summer, United will have to strengthen substantially with Ineos keen on making a statement.

With centre-half, a clear priority, right up alongside this position needs to be a replacement for Casemiro as he looks finished at this level.

This could be a defining signing, as getting the right one could hand Erik ten Hag the midfield he needs finally, with Mainoo partnered by a player equally as perfect.

Amadou Onana is the name that sticks out with United’s interest in him to partner Mainoo. But another name we should really be considering is Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

But regardless of who Ineos identify, a replacement must be a top priority.
