Spy series about a young James Bond returns for season 3, and you can watch them all for free

It’s been a few years since the last James Bond movie and while rumors are swirling that the next Bond actor has been chosen at last, the arrival of Alex Rider season 3 should help to alleviate your espionage cravings.

If you’ve not seen the previous installments of Alex Rider, bear with us as we’re here to give you a quick rundown of what you need to know about the TV series and why the spy thriller could be right up your street.

What is Alex Rider about?

Alex Rider is based on a series of novels by British author Anthony Horowitz who devised the idea of creating an espionage franchise around the teenage equivalent of James Bond.

Even Alex Rider’s surname was inspired by the Bond girl Honeychile Rider from the Dr No novel.

In the TV series, 14-year-old Alex Rider is thrust into the deadly world of espionage following the death of his uncle, Ian, who spent his life posing as a banker while secretly working as a spy for MI6.

When Alex is approached by Alan Blunt, the shadowy figurehead of an MI6 offshoot, he learns that he has been unknowingly trained by his uncle since he was a child and despite being just a teenager, he’s recruited as a spy.

Why we recommend Alex Rider

As the first two seasons of Alex Rider are already available, there is plenty of binge potential for the series.

And while the first installment had an audience rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, season 2 bettered that with 91%.

Season 3 promises to be the finest yet, too, as it’s based on the fifth book in Anthony Horowitz’s novel series, Scorpia, which is arguably the best of the bunch.

The first two seasons have hinted at the presence of an elusive terrorist network and season 3 sees Alex take on that shadowy cabal head-on.

Not only does Alex Rider boast a thrilling narrative, but its cast is also right up there with many prestige TV dramas.

Otto Farrant does a great job of bringing Alex Rider from page to screen while he’s also joined by acting powerhouses like Vicky McClure (Line of Duty) as well as Stephen Dillane and Brenock O’Connor who will both be familiar to Game of Thrones fans.

On top of that, season 3 will also see the arrival of Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean’s Joshamee Gibbs) who will take on the role of a mysterious villain.
