‘For sure’: Pep Guardiola says ‘incredible’ Man City star has been one of the best this season

Pep Guardiola has said that one of his Manchester City players should be in the running to be named as the Premier League Player of the Season.

The Citizens are currently in the frame to regain the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles they won last season.

After beating Aston Villa 4-1 in midweek, one figure in the City squad has been the topic of discussion, with Guardiola making a big claim about his efforts throughout the campaign.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference ahead of today’s Premier League away clash against Crystal Palace, Guardiola had this to say when asked if he thinks Phil Foden has been one of the best players in the league this season.

He said: “I think he is a contender, like many others. There are many, many players who play really, really good all season. Not just Phil. But I think he can be a contender, for sure, because of the numbers, consistency and the level of his game.

“Always he has [an] incredible work ethic. You see the last game he played [against Villa]? He was fouled, it was not given, he go down, stand up, press, recover the ball and net. Always Phil had that. From the day one, at 16/17 years old training, having an incredible dynamic and he still has it.

“But of course, football [is] defensive [and] offensive. Like I said before, your quality depends on the performance of your mates. How you move depends on the decisions of your mates, you have to take a decision quicker and after, smarter. And always there is margin to improve.”

In 30 Premier League games this season prior to the match at Selhurst Park, Foden has scored 14 goals and supplied seven assists.

As well as that, the 23-year-old has racked up the second-highest number of key passes (61) and goal-creating actions in the City squad (16).

His overall performances in the Premier League have earned the midfielder an impressive season rating of 7.47/10 from WhoScored, making him the third-highest-rated player in the division.

Taking all of that into account, it’s understandable why Guardiola thinks Foden has been one of the best performers in the league this season.

Moving forward, if the Englishman can keep delivering top performances and goal contributions that help his side win a fourth Premier League title in a row, we think that he should definitely be crowned as the Player of the Season.
