Occupied Crimea faces new challenge as Russia plans large-scale draft

Russia plan to draft 15,000 people in occupied Crimea

Eskender Bariev, chairman of the CTRC board, shared insights into possible mobilization efforts expected to commence in the nearest time.

"We have some preliminary, inside information that they (the Russians) may announce or intensify a partial mobilization from April 20,” said Eskender Bariev, the CTRC board's chairman and head of the External Relations and Human Rights Activities department of the Crimean Tatar People's Mejlis.

The scope and method of the conscription are still under review. "The mobilization's success might hinge on how they plan to encourage individuals to sign up and potentially participate in the war against Ukraine," he explained.

The mobilization tactics also include issuing draft notices during the "trials" of Crimean activists, a strategy seemingly designed to deter public engagement and activism. Bariev highlighted the case of Ali Seitablayev, a Crimean Tatar activist, who received a summons while attending a court session in a show of solidarity with Lenur Yakubov, another activist.

On March 31, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed a decree initiating a spring draft from April 1 to July 15, aiming to mobilize 150,000 soldiers into the army.
