Amazon Fresh replaces walk out technology with smart shopping carts

Amazon Fresh recently ditched its Just Walk Out technology and rolled in Dash Carts at its 44 stores nationwide.

Amazon Fresh is making some major changes to its high-tech checkout process.

The supermarket subsidiary of Amazon is removing its “Just Walk Out” cashierless checkout system from its stores.

Amazon Fresh is planning to move to Dash Carts as they ditch the Just Walk Out system.

The Dash Carts track items shoppers place into them and checkout by going through the Dash Cart lane. The Just Walk Out process relied on cameras and shelf sensors, letting customers pay without standing in line.

Amazon said it would continue using Just Walk Out technology in Amazon Go stores, smaller stores in the United Kingdom and third-party locations.

The Just walk Out technology was first implemented in the United States in 2016.

“We’ve also heard from customers that while they enjoyed the benefit of skipping the checkout line with Just Walk Out, they also wanted the ability to easily find nearby products and deals, view their receipt as they shop, and know how much money they saved while shopping throughout the store,” Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin said. “To deliver even more convenience to our customers, we’re rolling out Amazon Dash Cart, our smart-shopping carts, which allows customers all these benefits including skipping the checkout line.”

Amazon has been testing out the Dash Carts in select Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods stores.

Retailers like ShopRite have been rolling out new, high-tech smart carts to revolutionize the check out processes.

There are currently 44 Amazon Fresh stores nationwide and one in New Jersey.

Amazon Fresh made its Garden State debut in Paramus in 2022 and plans to open soon in Eatontown.
