Academy absence suggests Ten Hag could do something vs Liverpool he's only done 5 times before at Man Utd

Manchester United take on Liverpool this Sunday, and they’ll be looking to replicate the fine performance their academy side put on against their bitter rivals.

Manchester United’s under-18 academy side absolutely battered Liverpool 9-1 on Saturday afternoon, with some ludicrous performances throughout.

Ethan Wheatley bagged himself a hat-trick, Gabriele Biancheri got two and many other young Red Devils stars performed out of their skins in the memorable win – much like they have all season.

But such as there was a sea of good performances, Manchester United fans couldn’t help but notice that one of the usual suspects in Adam Lawrence’s side was amiss…

Manchester United’s injury predicament

It’s no secret to anyone that Manchester United are in a bit of an injury crisis at the moment, particularly at the back.

They have no fit left-backs at the club, with Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw suffering from long-term injuries. Shaw’s has been particularly annoying.

This means Erik ten Hag will likely have to field either Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Diogo Dalot on the left-hand side against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Concerning backup? The Dutch manager looks likely to include a 17-year-old for his first-ever first-team call-up – Harry Amass.

Harry Amass likely to be in the Manchester United squad vs Liverpool

According to the reputed Twitter/X account, Academy Scoop, young Harry Amass might be in line to receive his first-ever call-up to Manchester United’s first team.

The 17-year-old has already trained with the first team on more than a few occasions, including yesterday, and now it appears he’ll make the step up to Ten Hag’s main roster of players against Liverpool at Old Trafford. Talk about a baptism of fire. The post read:

‘Harry Amass has a strong chance of receiving his premier first-team call-up tomorrow afternoon when Manchester United face Liverpool at Old Trafford.’

‘The seventeen-year-old left-back was absent from under-18 action today, instead taking part in first-team training.’

Harry Amass could become Erik ten Hag’s sixth

Now this is by no means indicating he will start, but with tired legs from so many games, if Dalot or Wan-Bissaka were to pick up an injury, past instances have indicated Ten Hag isn’t afraid to throw young players in the deep end.

In fact. There have been five instances at Manchester United so far where Ten Hag has gifted an academy graduate their debut. Amass could be the sixth.

Time will tell as to whether he gets any minutes, but stranger things have certainly happened.
