Opinion: This is the real reason why West Ham concede more penalties than any other PL team

West Ham United have a really bad track record when it comes to conceding penalties in the Premier League this season.

Emerson Palmieri gave away our most recent penalty yesterday, during West Ham United’s 2-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League.

Despite that early setback, we turned around things around after some really clever substitutions at half-time and just after the break by Hammers boss David Moyes.

However, our track record of giving away penalties is a really big concern…

West Ham have conceded 10 penalties in the Premier League this season (Premier League’s official website) – that’s more than any other club and three more than Everton who’ve given away the second most in the top flight.

Sure, some decisions have gone against us. We’ve been incredibly unlucky at times with poor calls from referees and the VAR officials.

However, it can’t all be down to bad luck. In fact, I’m certain that it isn’t…

The the real reason West Ham concede so many penalties

It surely can’t be a coincidence that so many spot-kicks have been awarded against us this term.

It’s happening far too regularly for there not to be a practical reason as to why.

And I reckon I know why we’ve conceded noticeably more penalties than any other club this season.

This term, West Ham have averaged 41.1% possession in 32 Premier League games – the fourth lowest in the division (Fbref).

In addition to that, we’ve allowed our opponents more touches inside out penalty area then every other team in the league bar one – Sheffield United (Fbref).

Now, if you continue to give up the football for more or less two thirds of the game and allow the opposition free reign in your own box, you will come a cropper sooner rather than later.

Moyes surely has to look at this stat and realise that something isn’t right. The most annoying thing about it is that when we start to play attacking, front-foot football, we look miles better than we do when we sit back.

West Ham have given away far too many penalties this season. Whilst some of them may have been awarded incorrectly, we still only have ourselves to blame.

Hopefully Moyes sees this now and makes a concerted effort to change the way that his side sets up.
