Tax deadline is coming. You can still file for free.

With the April 15 tax deadline fast approaching, there are still ways you can file — and get helpfor free.

The first place to look is IRS Free File, a partnership between the IRS and private tax preparation companies.

Those with adjusted gross income of $79,000 or less can qualify to file federal tax returns for free. Just remember you may have to pay a fee to prepare state tax returns, but the service is free for federal returns.

The IRS haspartnered with eight companies for the 2023 tax season:

You may also qualify for help with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). This service offers free basic tax return preparation for people who generally make $64,000 or less. Persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers may also be eligible, the IRS said.

The IRS has certified the volunteers who work at VITA sites. They must take and pass tax law training, which includes training about keeping the all taxpayer information confidential, the IRS said.

Then there are Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs, which offer free help to those over age 60. They specialize in pension and other retirement-related issues.

The sites are run by AARP Tax-Aide Volunteers who receive IRS training.

Check Publication 3676-B, which details what services are provided by VITA or TCE site, and you can review what documents you need to bring with the IRS’ “What to Bring” list before you go.

You can find a VITA or TCE site at irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep or call (800) 906-9887. Note that some locations require appointments.

The tax filing deadline is April 15, 2024.
